Arthur Phillip Park has a history. It was once two separate parks. They were Cook Park and Phillip Park. Boomerang Street divided them. Cook Park was on the south-west side. Phillip Park was on the north-east. They were named after Captain James Cook and Governor Arthur Phillip.
Boomerang Street became a transport route. It carried buses and trams to the eastern suburbs. Haig Avenue was built in 1912. It provided tram lines for workers. They went to Woolloomooloo and Garden Island.
One of Sydney’s first bowling clubs was in Cook Park. It was built in 1880. Several buildings were built in Phillip Park. One was a police station. It was built in 1880. It was demolished in 1960. The Police Boys Club replaced it.
A playground was built in 1907. It became the Phillip Park Recreation Centre. The council nursery moved here in 1910. A fragrance garden was added in 1962. It was for workers at the Industrial Blind Institute. The institute was demolished in 1971. Park Lane Towers apartments replaced it.
The park was redeveloped in 1997. The bowling club and streets were removed. A swimming pool complex was built. A grey paved concourse was added. It sits in front of the cathedral.
Arthur Phillip Park also remembers tragedy. A memorial marks where Constable Allan McQueen was shot. He died several days later. This happened in 1989.
