Dreaming of a place where Zurich’s forgotten art finds new life? That’s Art Dock Zuerich. It is a gallery dedicated to alternative and contemporary Swiss art. Art Dock is located in Zurich’s former freight terminal near Hardbrücke.

Art Dock Zuerich began in 2013. Its purpose was to preserve the legacies of Zurich’s contemporary artists for future generations. Ralph Baenziger curated the gallery. Key team members included Fritz Billeter, Guido Magnaguagno and Dieter Bachmann.

The first collections managed were those of sculptors Otto Müller and Trudi Demut. The collection found its home in the halls of the disused freight terminal. These halls were initially intended for temporary use until 2016 before demolition. The use was extended until 2021.

By 2019, Art Dock Zuerich held the legacies of 123 artists. Some works were sold to support the preservation of the legacies. Art Dock also exhibits works by living artists. In 2016, the “Frauenpower!” exhibition showcased 144 Zurich female artists from the last 100 years.

Ralph Baenziger’s persistence allowed part of the freight terminal to remain as an exhibition space. Art Dock preserves Zurich art history. It showcases masters that local art lovers may not even know.

Past exhibitions include “Überblick” in 2013 and “Weitblick” in 2014. Also “Wahnwelt-Wellen” in 2015 and “Art Dock Re Reborn” in 2020. Art Dock Zuerich is located at Hohlstrasse 258. You can reach it by Tram 8 or Bus 31 to Hardplatz station.

Art Dock holds Oral History sessions. Witnesses share their experiences and knowledge of the exhibited artists. Works are available for purchase after the exhibitions.

Art Dock Zuerich is more than a gallery. It’s a place where Zurich’s artistic heritage is cherished and shared.
