Right here, on this quiet little hill, a quiet memorial stands amidst greenery and whispers of the past. This is the Arnold-Bürkli-Gedenkstein, a tribute to the man who shaped Zurich’s cityscape. Its simple design speaks of a life dedicated to engineering and progress. Arnold Bürkli was Zurich’s first municipal engineer. He was responsible for the construction of many of Zurich’s iconic landmarks, including the Bahnhofbrücke and Bahnhofstrasse, as well as the Stadelhofen and Industriequartier districts. He was a key figure in Zurich’s transformation into the city we know today. His legacy is visible everywhere you look in this vibrant urban landscape.
Did you know that the charming promenade that stretches along the lakefront was built on land reclaimed from the lake? It was all thanks to Bürkli’s vision and dedication as the leader of the “Quaibaukommission.” He used the rubble from the old city walls to build the quay, transforming Zurich’s relationship with the lake. In the late 19th century, Zurich found itself in dire straits. The city was choked by its own growth, cramped and unhealthy, and sanitation was a major concern. It was Bürkli who, during the cholera epidemic of 1867, helped introduce sweeping reforms to Zurich’s waste management and water supply systems. Ironically, a new public bath, designed to elevate sanitation, was later destroyed by a violent storm and ultimately led to a focus on creating safe and clean swimming areas along the lakefront.
This memorial, a stone etched with his name, sits within the Arboretum, his favourite place to escape the city’s hustle. He was a man who loved his city and who left an enduring footprint on its character. It’s a reminder that the past is not just a history book but a living force that continues to shape our present.
