Listen to this story about the Arlington United Methodist Church. This church has a unique story that intertwines faith with community. It also involves an unusual alliance.

The Arlington United Methodist Church’s narrative is not just about a place of worship. It’s about a community’s evolution. It is about adapting to the changing times while holding onto its core values.

Let’s rewind to the 1960s. Lumber magnate William P. Ames had a vision. He wanted to build a hotel and a church in the rapidly redeveloping Rosslyn area. There was a problem. A gas station already occupied the desired spot. Ames struck a deal. The Arlington United Methodist Church would be built on top of the gas station. It would be adjacent to the hotel now known as the Arlington Hyatt. Thus began an unusual pairing. The church became affectionately known as “Our Lady of Exxon”.

In 2021, Snell Properties announced plans to redevelop the site. The plan included 740 new housing units. It also included a rebuilt gas station and church. The Arlington United Methodist Church congregation temporarily moved. They relocated to 1701 N. Bryan Street in Arlington. The congregation plans to return to the Rosslyn site when construction is complete. This unique church has adapted to survive.

The story of Arlington United Methodist Church is a testament to community. The holy alliance between a church and a gas station shows a willingness to adapt. The church embraces change while honoring its commitment to its members.

The Arlington United Methodist Church stands as a symbol. It symbolizes adaptability and community spirit. Its history is etched into the very foundation upon which it stands. Its foundation also literally includes a gas station. It serves as a reminder of the ever-evolving landscape of urban life. It shows the enduring power of faith and community.
