“Founded on faith and fellowship,” that’s the motto that encapsulates the Arlington Church of the Brethren. This church stands as a calm center, amid the busy lives of those in a large urban area. The Arlington Church of the Brethren is more than just a building. It’s a community hub with a rich history.
The story of Arlington Church of the Brethren began in December 1951. A planning committee formed in the home of Ralph and Olivia Compton. Their vision? To establish a Church of the Brethren ministry and worship center in Arlington.
The first service took place on April 12, 1953. It was held at Stonewall Jackson Elementary School. Initially, guest ministers led the congregation. Later in July 1953, the Rev. Glen Weimer became the first full-time pastor. At that time, the congregation had approximately 100 members.
Ground broke for the new church building on January 20, 1957. The first service in the current building was December 22, 1957. The dedication ceremony occurred on April 12, 1958. This day marked the anniversary of the first congregational service.
From its earliest days, the Arlington Church of the Brethren looked beyond its own walls. Members took on leadership roles in the Mid-Atlantic District. They cooperated with other local Church of the Brethren congregations. They supported camping programs and participated in local ecumenical events. The church has always embraced the challenges of its location.
Today, the Arlington Church of the Brethren continues to thrive. The congregation works to offer spiritual and emotional support. They celebrate shared understandings of God, faith, love, peace, and compassion. The church extends an open invitation to all. People of every race, gender, religious background, and sexual orientation are welcome.
The Arlington Church of the Brethren offers various programs. Small groups meet for study or socialization. A weekly dance party offers a fun connection point. The Young Adult Dinner fosters community among those in their 30s. The Breakfast Bunch provides informal monthly fellowship. The Lunch Bunch offers a casual setting to connect after Sunday worship.
Music is central to the Arlington Church of the Brethren. Programs include a Community Vocal Choir and a Handbell Choir. Special music enhances worship services. The ACOB Players bring Bible stories to life through skits.
The Arlington Church of the Brethren shares God’s love through service. It serves as a hub of service support. It coordinates volunteers and collects donations. These go to local and international service agencies. Everyone is invited to make a difference through the church.
Current service opportunities abound. The Arlington Church of the Brethren participates in Arlington’s CROP Walk. They are constructing a Little Free Library. They collect extra calendars for donation. They support the Arlington Food Assistance Center. They donate toiletries to those without homes.
