“Daybreak” whispers through the air here in Ariake. Can you feel it? It means “the expectation of a new day”. Ariake is a district in Koto, Tokyo. It sits east of Odaiba. This area is part of the Tokyo Bay Landfill No. 10 and Tokyo Rinkai Satellite City Center.
Ariake’s story is one of transformation. Once, this land was underwater. The Tokyo Bay Offshore Expansion Project reclaimed it from 1931. Imagine lumberyards and warehouses here. Picture a golf course and a tennis park too. All before Ariake became Tokyo Waterfront Secondary City Center in 1986.
Look around. This area has been developing rapidly since the 1960s. Condominiums and commercial facilities rose quickly. This was during Japan’s high economic growth era. Transportation infrastructure also boosted development.
See that large building? That is Tokyo Big Sight. It is an international exhibition center and one of Ariake’s landmarks. It has over 300,000 square meters of floor space. It hosts events like the Tokyo International Toy Day and Comiket. Comiket is a comic book convention that attracts fans worldwide. Even without a convention, Tokyo Big Sight welcomes visitors.
Notice the Ariake-tennis-no-mori Park nearby. It has 48 tennis courts. Before this park, the Shinonome Golf Course was here from 1952 to 1981. The Ariake Colosseum sits at the center. It can hold up to 10,000 people. This area also used to have the Shinonome Air Base. It had a 430-meter runway but closed in 1980.
Consider Ariake’s role as a disaster prevention hub. The east side serves as a wide-area disaster prevention center. It supports emergency medical care. It also acts as a relay base for emergency transport supplies. In 2011, the national government designated Ariake as a Special Zone for Asian Headquarters.
Remember the 2020 Summer Olympics. The flame cauldron was installed on the Yume no Ohashi bridge. It crosses the Ariake West Canal. Ariake gained new sports venues. These included the Ariake Gymnastics Centre, Ariake Arena, and Ariake Urban Sports Park. The Ariake Gymnastics Center has been rebranded as ‘Ariake GYM-EX’.
