Arcola United Methodist Church

Edward B. Force’s inheritance in 1838 set the stage for the Arcola United Methodist Church. He received a mill and farm at Red Mills from his father-in-law. Just a few years later, a barn on the property became a makeshift chapel, hosting religious services starting in 1842. This simple act of faith foreshadowed the establishment of the Arcola United Methodist Church. In 1843, Force donated land for the church’s construction. Neighbors rallied together, bringing logs to the mill to be sawn into timbers for the new building. Rev. Manning Force, Edward’s brother, laid the cornerstone. The church we see today is the result of continuous growth and expansion. Arcola Church has seen several building phases throughout the years. The addition of the Fellowship Hall, the construction of the new worship center in 2005, and the completion of Phase II and III expansions demonstrate the church’s commitment to its community. The church’s history is intertwined with the village of Arcola itself. From its early days in a log cabin near Gum Spring, the church has played a vital role in the community. Arcola Church’s involvement extends beyond its walls. It helped establish the Arcola Volunteer Fire Department, the Arcola Lions Club, and Arcola Elementary School. Arcola Church stands as a testament to the dedication and faith of its congregation and the community it serves.
