Feel the cool spray of False Bay on your face. Welcome to Aquarium Boulders a hidden gem near Simon’s Town. These aren’t just any boulders. These aren’t the Emperor penguins of Antarctica. These are Jackass penguins. They’re called that because of their distinctive hee-haw call. Can you hear them now? Their little tuxedo-clad bodies waddle along the beach. They’re remarkably unafraid of humans. You can observe them nesting and raising their fluffy brown chicks. They’re not just cute. They are endangered. Overfishing and habitat loss have decimated their numbers. But here at Aquarium Boulders they’re thriving under the protection of Table Mountain National Park.
The colony reached a peak of around 1200 breeding pairs in 2005. It has since declined to about 800 breeding pairs. The decline is primarily due to overfishing and a reduction in accessible food. The penguins mainly feed on anchovy and sardine. The stocks of these fish have moved eastwards off the southern parts of South Africa. The African Penguin is now listed as Endangered. The total population has plummeted from over a million in the 1930s to only 20 000 pairs. Oil spills have also negatively impacted their numbers.
Look closely. You might spot a Rock Hyrax or dassie sunning itself among the boulders. These adorable creatures are surprisingly related to elephants. Their closest relative is the elephant. They look like rodents but they are certainly unique. They share this habitat with the penguins. They too are part of the rich biodiversity of this area.
The waters of False Bay are warmer than along the Atlantic seaboard. Aquarium Boulders offers a sheltered beach. It is protected from wind heavy waves and currents. The large rocks act like giant marbles. You can enjoy a picnic here. But remember to respect the penguins’ space. They have razor-sharp beaks and can inflict serious injury. Maintain a safe distance.
