Slipping beneath the waves of the city, we find the Aquário do Centro. But let’s dive deeper than the surface. The Aquário de São Paulo, as it’s known locally, isn’t just any aquarium. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with threads from the Amazon to the chilly reaches of the polar regions. Inaugurated in 2006, the Aquário do Centro was Latin America’s first thematic aquarium, a testament to Brazil’s commitment to showcasing the wonders of the aquatic world. Initially, the Aquário do Centro focused on the diverse ecosystems within Brazil, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest, the vast Pantanal wetlands, and even the Tietê River basin. Imagine giant pirarucus, their scales shimmering like coins in the filtered light, sharing a tank with the whiskered faces of redtail catfish.
The story of the Aquário do Centro is one of growth and expansion. In 2008, the “Marine World” section opened, introducing visitors to the transition from freshwater to saltwater environments. Mangroves, sandy beaches, and rocky coasts filled with vibrant marine life came to life within the Aquário do Centro. This expansion brought sharks, rays, and playful penguins to the mix, enriching the already impressive collection. A few years later, the Amazon section expanded further, welcoming a gentle manatee, curious otters, and the lumbering giant anteater. The Aquário do Centro continued to evolve, its story reaching beyond Brazil’s borders.
In 2015, a major expansion transported visitors to far-off continents. Meerkats from Africa scampered playfully, while flying foxes from Indonesia soared overhead. Australian kangaroos hopped alongside wombats, and a rare echidna added a touch of the unusual to the Aquário do Centro. The most dramatic addition was the arrival of Aurora and Peregrino, two polar bears from Russia. Their 1,500-square-meter enclosure, kept at a chilly -15°C to -5°C, mimics the icy landscapes of their homeland. They are the first polar bears in Brazil, a remarkable feat of adaptation and animal care within the Aquário do Centro. From the warm waters of the Amazon to the icy homes of polar bears, the Aquário do Centro offers a journey through diverse ecosystems, a celebration of life beneath the waves. It’s more than an aquarium; it’s a portal to the wonders of our planet, right here in the heart of São Paulo.
