In 1938 amidst the turmoil of World War II a young man sought spiritual solace. He found it in the Apostolic Church of Jesus Inc. This wasn’t just any church. It was a beacon of hope during a time of uncertainty. Founded by Elder Harry Johnson a World War I veteran the Apostolic Church of Jesus Inc. first opened its doors at 1135 Green Street in Tampa Florida. Elder Johnson a born leader wasn’t just a pastor he was the first Overseer of this burgeoning church. He guided the church from 1939 until his death in 1971 laying the foundation for what would become a significant spiritual force.
The Apostolic Church of Jesus in Tampa wasn’t isolated. It was part of a network. It was one of the first locations of this denomination with other churches in cities like Lakeland and Avon Park. This early network became the West Coast District. It shows the dedication and foresight of its early members. They believed in spreading the word.
Over the years the leadership of the Apostolic Church of Jesus changed. Elder E L Sharrod took the reins after Elder Johnson. Then came Elder Bruce Hamilton followed by Elder Melvin Lee and Elder Sammy Jacobs. Each leader contributed to the church’s growth and evolution. They guided the church through various challenges. They ensured the church’s mission continued for decades.
Elder Samuel Hunt Sr became the sixth District Overseer. His contributions included promoting unity among the various churches within the District. He focused on community outreach. He ensured the church remained relevant and connected to its community. He also worked to expand the church’s reach into new areas such as Fort Myers. His leadership exemplified the spirit of dedication and service.
Today the Apostolic Church of Jesus continues its mission. It spreads the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It enriches the lives of believers. It welcomes people from all backgrounds.
