Gazing across the serene waters, can you envision a life intertwined with the sea? This, my friends, is Ap Chau, also known as Robinson Island. A tiny jewel nestled in Hong Kong’s Crooked Harbour. Ap Chau’s story begins not with grand empires or fierce battles, but with the humble lives of Tanka fishermen. In the 1920s, these seafaring people, originally a non-Chinese ethnic minority, sought refuge in Ap Chau’s sheltered bay. They used the island as a temporary haven, a place to mend their nets and repair their boats. Ap Chau was a practical stop, not yet a home. But the winds of change were blowing. The 1940s saw these transient fishermen begin to put down roots, building informal settlements. The island, once a simple waystation, became a community. A pivotal moment in Ap Chau’s history arrived with the arrival of The True Jesus Church in 1952. Forced to relocate from mainland China due to the shift in power, the church found a new home on Ap Chau, constructing a simple wooden structure. This act drew even more residents to the island, creating a close-knit community centered around faith. Life on Ap Chau was not easy. Fresh water was a precious commodity. This changed in 1960 thanks to aid from the United States CARE program and the efforts of the islanders, assisted by the British Military. They laid underground pipes to bring fresh water from a reservoir in So Lo Pun, a testament to their resilience and ingenuity. With basic necessities secured, Ap Chau thrived. The official Ap Chau Fishermen Village was established in 1961, further solidifying the island’s identity. Even a primary school, FMO Ap Chau Primary School, opened its doors in 1958, offering education to the island’s children. At its peak, Ap Chau boasted a population of over 700. But as opportunities arose in the United Kingdom, many residents sought new lives in cities like Newcastle upon Tyne, Leicester, and Edinburgh during the 1960s and 1970s. Today, Ap Chau’s population has dwindled, but its spirit endures. The church remains active, a symbol of the island’s enduring faith. And for those seeking a glimpse into Ap Chau’s rich past, the Ap Chau Story Room, housed in the former primary school, offers a fascinating journey through time. Ap Chau reminds us that even the smallest of places can hold the grandest of stories. It is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to adapt, to build community, and to find a home, even on a tiny island in the vast expanse of the sea.
