Nestled in the heart of Tokyo, Aoyama Junior High School isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to a fascinating history, deeply intertwined with the growth of Aoyama Gakuin. Aoyama Gakuin itself began as a dream, a vision brought to life in 1874 by Dora E. Schoonmaker, an American missionary. She, along with other influential figures like Davidson Macdonald, laid the foundation for what would become a renowned educational institution. Aoyama Junior High School, a vital part of this institution, has been shaping young minds for generations. Established in 1947 as a co-educational institution, Aoyama Junior High School quickly found its place within the larger framework of Aoyama Gakuin. Later, in 1986, it merged with the Senior High School to become Aoyama Gakuin Junior-Senior High School. But the story doesn’t end there. Aoyama Junior High School continued to evolve, culminating in the construction of brand-new buildings on campus in 2017. Today, Aoyama Junior High School is a vibrant learning community of up to 768 students, aged 12 to 15. These students represent a blend of backgrounds, with approximately half coming from Aoyama Gakuin Elementary School and the other half gaining admission through entrance exams. The school’s commitment to holistic education shines through in its curriculum. Aoyama Junior High emphasizes not only academics but also personal growth. With smaller class sizes for core subjects like Japanese, mathematics, and English, students receive individualized attention. The school also incorporates unique learning experiences such as oral communication classes with native English speakers, science labs, and courses in home sciences and technology. Aoyama Junior High School also prides itself on its Christian heritage. This foundation is evident in the daily chapel services and weekly Bible classes, where students explore their faith and learn the values of love, service, and gratitude. This spiritual focus permeates all aspects of the school’s teachings, fostering an environment of empathy and understanding. For those who graduate, the journey often continues within the Aoyama Gakuin family. Over 95% of Aoyama Junior High School graduates move on to Aoyama Gakuin Senior High School. From there, a significant number continue their education at Aoyama Gakuin University or Aoyama Gakuin Women’s Junior College. Aoyama Junior High School stands as a testament to the enduring vision of its founders. More than just a school, it is a place where young minds are nurtured and prepared for a future of service and leadership.
