Aotea Lagoon is more than just a pretty park; it’s a testament to the dynamic history of Wellington. Aotea Lagoon is an artificial lagoon in Papakowhai, Porirua. It was created in the early 1960s. The North Island Main Trunk railway and State Highway 1 used to run around three bays between Porirua and Paremata. In the early 1960s, the railway was realigned. The bays were cut off from the sea, and they became lagoons. The railway was moved to a causeway built between headlands at the mouth of Porirua Stream. To realign the highway, some of the lagoons were filled in with material from nearby earthworks. Eventually, the Ministry of Works and Development, Porirua City Council, Project Employment Programme, and local service clubs joined forces to transform the area around the middle lagoon into a public aquatic park. Aotea Lagoon officially opened to the public in 1980. The 7-hectare (17-acre) park was originally leased from the Crown. It was given to the council in 1994. Today, Aotea Lagoon is a beloved spot for recreation, offering playgrounds, walking paths, and a miniature railway. It’s a vibrant reminder of the human hand’s impact on the landscape.
