You might not know that Antrim House was built in 1905 for Robert Hannah and his family. Robert was quite the successful businessman here in Wellington, and his success is reflected in the grandness of Antrim House. He even named this beautiful Italianate house after County Antrim, his home county in Ireland. Antrim House is a two-story, 18-room building built from totara wood. It also has a central tower with an ornate iron crown. The building is classified as a Category 1 Historic Place, which means it is recognized as something of special or outstanding historical or cultural significance. Today, Antrim House is the central office of Heritage New Zealand, an organization that works to preserve our country’s heritage.
