Have you ever wondered about a man who loved the stars so much that he defied the odds to make his passion a reality? That’s what this plaque commemorates. It honors Antonín Bečvář, a Czech astronomer who, faced with physical challenges, became a pioneer in his field.

This, a simple plaque in Brandýs nad Labem, is a testament to his incredible journey. Antonín Bečvář was born in Stará Boleslav in 1901. Due to a debilitating health condition, he couldn’t pursue his true passion for astronomy until his early thirties.

However, he refused to let his circumstances define his life. Despite his illness, he built a small observatory in the garden of his family’s estate in Brandýs nad Labem. He built a telescope and designed a mounting system for it. He started publishing his observations in “Říše hvězd,” a magazine focused on astronomy, and soon became known in the field.

His determination and talent earned him a position as a state climatologist in the High Tatras, a mountain range in Slovakia. He built a small observatory there, and his work was recognized by the Slovakian government, inspiring one of his most significant accomplishments.

The Slovak government of the time had no observatory of its own. Bečvář successfully argued that every nation deserved one. He persuaded the Slovak government to dedicate funds to build an observatory in Skalnaté Pleso. This became a landmark project – the only high-altitude observatory in the then Czechoslovakia.

The Skalnaté Pleso observatory is considered one of the most prestigious high-altitude observatories in Europe. It stands as a lasting testament to Antonín Bečvář’s dedication, ambition, and unwavering passion for astronomy. He continued to make groundbreaking discoveries, including contributing to the creation of the Atlas Coeli star charts, which were considered the most advanced in the world until the late 1970s. Antonín Bečvář left his mark on the celestial world, forever impacting the study of astronomy and inspiring generations of aspiring astronomers.
