A hidden gem awaits us right here. Let’s uncover the story of Annunciation Catholic Church. It stands as a testament to faith and resilience in the heart of Washington D.C. Annunciation Catholic Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub of music and community, echoing with the melodies of the Catherine and Mary Roth Concerts Series.

The journey of Annunciation Catholic Church began in 1937. Archbishop Michael Joseph Curley acquired the land. World War II halted construction. Undeterred, Curley found a temporary solution. He obtained a structure from Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Bethesda. This structure opened its doors as the Church of the Annunciation on July 11, 1943. It served as a mission of St. Ann’s in Tenley Circle.

Annunciation Catholic Church officially became a parish on June 12, 1948. Father Russell Phelan became its first pastor. By 1954, the school, convent, and parish hall were complete. The same year, Annunciation Catholic School opened its doors. It was staffed by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. A procession of pastors followed. Msgr. William Hoffman succeeded Fr. Phelan in 1963. Msgr. E. Robert Arthur took the helm in 1966. Msgr. James F. Montgomery served from 1972 to 2000. In 2018, Monsignor Michael Mellone became the current pastor.

A notable moment in the church’s history came in August 1976. The church welcomed Karol Wojtyla, then Cardinal and Archbishop of Krakow. He later became Pope John Paul II and was canonized in 2014. Imagine standing in the same space as a future saint. Annunciation Catholic Church has witnessed history unfold within its walls. It continues to serve as a spiritual home for its community. The church also offers a vibrant music program. A traditional carillon of 25 bells was installed in May 2023. The bells chime before masses and during Sunday recitals. This adds another layer of richness to the church’s vibrant atmosphere. Annunciation Catholic Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith, resilience, and community.
