Anna Whitlocks gymnasium is Stockholm’s largest, a vibrant hub of learning with around 2,200 students. It opened its doors in 2018, a fresh face on the Stockholm education scene, yet housed in a building steeped in history. The structure itself dates back to 1926, originally serving as Ämbetshuset, the County Administrative Board’s building. Designed by architect Axel Lindegren, this grand stone edifice with four wings enclosing a courtyard has witnessed a transformation. Now, Anna Whitlocks gymnasium breathes new life into these historic walls. Imagine transitioning from government offices to classrooms filled with eager students. The building’s significance is recognized by its “green marking” from the Stockholm City Museum, a testament to its historical and cultural value. Anna Whitlocks gymnasium even won first place in the Årets Stockholmsbyggnad (Stockholm Building of the Year) award in 2019. The jury praised the respectful reuse of the robust architecture, calling it a “proud building for proud students.” Inside, education thrives. Students can choose from a range of programs: Natural Sciences, Technology, Economics, Aesthetics, and Social Sciences. All programs emphasize sustainable development, reflecting the school’s motto of “education and innovation for a sustainable future.” And it’s not just academics that flourish here. Art donated from Liljevalchs konsthall graces the walls. In the dining hall, pages from the Russian edition of Vladimir Mayakovsky’s “For the Voice,” illustrated by El Lisitskij, hang as a reminder of the power of art and expression. A unique lamp designed by craftsman Anders “Lagombra” Jakobsen illuminates the entrance. Even the lunch menu, prepared by trained chefs, reflects a commitment to sustainability, using natural ingredients and avoiding processed foods.
