Deep within Tai Sheung Tok hill lies the Anderson Road Quarry Joint Cavern. This isn’t just any cavern. It’s a marvel of engineering a testament to human ingenuity carved into the very heart of a mountain.
The Anderson Road Quarry itself has a rich history. For decades it provided construction materials shaping the skyline of Hong Kong. From 1964 until 2017 K Wah Group operated this quarry. Its location on the ridge offered a spectacular view. Sadly it was also criticized for harming the beauty and feng shui of Victoria Harbour.
Now repurposed the quarry’s massive rock face provides a unique setting for the Anderson Road Quarry Joint Cavern project. This ambitious undertaking will house both a Public Works Central Laboratory and a Government Records Service Archives Centre. Imagine these vital government functions nestled securely within the mountain’s embrace.
The scale is breathtaking. The cavern complex will span approximately 12,500 square meters with a combined volume exceeding 350,000 cubic meters. This is a truly massive undertaking.
What makes this project truly innovative is its use of Modular Integrated Construction or MiC. Think prefabricated modules assembled like giant Lego bricks. This approach significantly reduces construction time and on-site work. It’s a first for this type of cavern development in Hong Kong.
The project commenced in July 2023. It’s expected to be completed by July 2028. Once finished the Anderson Road Quarry Joint Cavern will not only provide crucial government services but also showcase a sustainable and ingenious approach to land use.
The Anderson Road Quarry Joint Cavern represents more than just a building project. It’s a symbol of Hong Kong’s resilience its capacity for innovation and its commitment to efficient land use. This unique cavern complex reimagines what’s possible within the very earth beneath our feet. It transforms a former quarry into a modern marvel a testament to both nature and human achievement. This is the Anderson Road Quarry Joint Cavern a place where history meets the future.
