The Anders Gustav Plaque commemorates the life and work of Anders Gustav (1947-2006), a prominent figure in Solna’s political landscape. He served as chairman of the municipal council, leaving an undeniable mark on the city’s development. Often called “Solna’s strong man,” Anders Gustav held a unique position. He was one of the few Swedish municipal councilors to use the title of mayor without legal backing. His political career began in the late 1960s. He served as chairman of the Moderate Youth League in Stockholm County. His influence extended beyond Solna’s borders. He was a member of Stockholm County Council and its regional planning and traffic committee for many years. Anders Gustav was also chairman of the Municipal Federation’s Stockholm County Community Building Committee. His commitment to regional issues was evident in his stance against the congestion tax trial in Stockholm. He championed the development of a new multi-function arena to replace the Råsunda Football Stadium. Under his leadership, Solna achieved a remarkable feat, becoming a debt-free municipality with the country’s lowest municipal tax. Anders Gustav’s strategic approach involved selling municipal land. This attracted numerous leading companies to establish their offices in Solna, including many head offices. This period also saw the expansion of residential areas, notably Frösunda. A strong advocate for European cooperation and a supporter of the EU, Anders Gustav held key positions within the EU’s Committee of the Regions. He served as vice-chairman and chaired the Swedish delegation. His political journey ended abruptly in 2006. He passed away at Frankfurt Airport while traveling from Cannes, where he had attended a real estate and investment fair. He was en route to Jönköping to address the Moderates’ national municipal conference. The Anders Gustav Plaque serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to Solna and beyond.
