Carved into the very rock face before you are ancient symbols. These are the Ancient Rock Carvings of Hong Kong. They whisper tales of a time long past a time before skyscrapers and bustling streets. These carvings are not merely decorative. They are a tangible link to the Bronze Age in this region.

Nine of these incredible rock carvings have been officially designated as monuments. They are scattered across Hong Kong Island Lantau Island Cheung Chau and other islands. Scholars believe the carvings date back to approximately the time of China’s Shang dynasty.

Imagine the artisans who created these intricate designs. They worked tirelessly chipping away at the stone. Their tools were simple perhaps sharpened stones or even bone. The designs themselves are a mix of geometric shapes and what some believe to be stylized animals. The largest carving is located on Tung Lung Island. It measures an impressive 180 by 240 centimeters.

One particularly interesting carving is located at Wong Chuk Hang on Hong Kong Island. Unlike most other carvings these are situated far from the sea at least a kilometer away. This is unusual. Most of the carvings are near the coast. This suggests a connection to the sea. Perhaps they were meant to protect fishermen from the dangers of the ocean. Or perhaps they played a more significant role in the lives of the people who made them.

Another noteworthy carving is at Cape Collinson. Discovered only in 2018 this carving is remarkably well-preserved. Its remote location high on a cliff likely protected it from the elements and the hands of time. Archaeologists consider it one of the most visually impressive carvings of its age.

The purpose of the Ancient Rock Carvings is still debated. Some believe they were created to appease the gods and protect against bad weather. Others suggest a more ceremonial or ritualistic significance. Whatever their true purpose these markings remain powerful reminders of Hong Kong’s ancient past. They serve as a testament to the resilience creativity and ingenuity of the people who inhabited these islands millennia ago. Standing here you are bridging a vast chasm of time connecting with the spirits of those who came before.
