What if I told you a Persian soldier’s conversion led to a magnificent statue? This is the story of Anastasio il Persiano. Here before you stands Anastasio il Persiano. This statue commemorates a soldier’s profound spiritual journey. Anastasio wasn’t always a Christian. He was a Persian soldier.

In 614 the Persian King Khosrow II sent his army to Jerusalem. This event profoundly impacted Anastasio. Upon returning to Persia Anastasio left his military career. He journeyed back to Jerusalem. There he embraced the Christian faith. He was baptized.

Anastasio became a religious man. He was sent to Caesarea in Palestine. Here Anastasio preached to the Persians. His actions did not go unnoticed. He was arrested for his newfound faith. Authorities demanded he renounce Christianity. But Anastasio refused to abandon his beliefs.

His reputation as a man of faith grew among Christians. But some considered him a threat to public order. Ultimately Anastasio was beheaded for his unwavering faith. His martyrdom is commemorated every year on January 22.

Pope Clement XI recognized the significance of Anastasio’s story. He commissioned Francesco Moderati to create this statue. The statue commemorates the discovery of relics of martyrs. This discovery occurred during the construction of the main altar in the fourth chapel.

Francesco Moderati created a magnificent marble sculpture in 1717. The statue showcases impressive fine clothing details. This statue serves as a testament to Anastasio il Persiano’s unwavering faith. It reminds us of the power of conversion. It celebrates the courage to stand up for one’s beliefs.
