Over 400 light bulbs illuminated this place. Can you imagine? We stand before the Amtsgebäude Vorgartenstraße. Originally the Erzherzog-Albrecht-Kaserne this building has a rich history. Built between 1894 and 1896 it was a state-of-the-art infantry barracks. Electric lighting was a remarkable feature for its time.
The Amtsgebäude Vorgartenstraße wasn’t just any barracks. It was one of the Praterkasernen. This nickname reflected its location near the Prater amusement park. Interestingly Bosnian soldiers stationed here called it the Halb-Rechts-Kaserne. This was due to its proximity to the Ausstellungsstraße. They even had their own prayer room.
After World War I the Austrian army occupied the Amtsgebäude Vorgartenstraße. Then in 1938 the German Wehrmacht took over. Following World War II the Red Army used it. Bomb damage left its mark. The building only partially reconstructed. In 1979 a conscription office was built here. It served soldiers from Vienna and parts of northern Burgenland. The conscription office moved in late January 2024.
The Amtsgebäude Vorgartenstraße stands near the Messe Wien. This is Vienna’s modern exhibition center. The U2 subway line also runs nearby. A new building is planned within the Rossauer Kaserne. After that the Amtsgebäude Vorgartenstraße will be sold.
The Vienna State Police Directorate will move to a new building on the Amtsgebäude Vorgartenstraße grounds. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025. The Amtsgebäude Vorgartenstraße continues to evolve. Its past as a barracks is now making way for a new chapter. This building is a testament to Vienna’s layered history. It’s a fascinating blend of military past and future potential.
