“Erected on August 7, 1869, by Balthasar Schmitz, born in Ensen, in America.” That’s the inscription you see on the Amerikakreuz. This memorial stands as a testament to transatlantic ties. It links Cologne to the United States. But what is the story behind this unique monument?

The Amerikakreuz’s history is intertwined with German-American relations. Though this specific monument was erected in 1869, its significance evolved over time. The Amerika Haus Cologne, opened in 1955, became a crucial cultural and information center. It represented the United States on a historic site. This site was once the grounds of the Apostelgymnasium in Cologne. Konrad Adenauer, the first German Chancellor, even studied there. He strongly supported transatlantic relations.

For over five decades, the Amerika Haus served as a “window to America.” It gave people insight into American culture, politics, and economics. The Amerika Haus Cologne hosted many prominent guests. These included German and American politicians, ambassadors, and cultural icons. Roy Lichtenstein, Toni Morrison, and Jessye Norman were among them.

In its early years, the Amerika Haus filled a cultural void in Cologne. It provided many programs. These included concerts, lectures, exhibitions, film screenings, and theatre performances. Its library offered access to American literature. They even operated an “info-mobile” bus throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. The Amerika Haus played a significant role in rebuilding democratic education in Germany after World War II.

As the 1960s progressed, the Amerika Haus Cologne faced public protests. These protests were against US political decisions, such as the Vietnam War. Social and political movements, like the Women’s and Civil Rights Movements, became central themes.

After the Cold War, the programming shifted. It focused on the challenges of modernity. Immigration, integration, welfare state reform, environmental concerns, and globalization were key topics.

Following the September 11th attacks in 2001, the fight against international terrorism took center stage. It became the most important topic for the Amerika Haus.

From 1955, the Amerika Haus Cologne was part of the independent “U.S. Information Service.” In 1999, it was integrated into the U.S. Department of State. It then served as the public relations department for the U.S. Consulate General in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In September 2007, the public relations department moved to the U.S. Consulate General’s Office in Düsseldorf. The Amerika Haus Cologne was closed. It was the last Amerika Haus run by the American administration in Germany. Today, the building houses the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. Architect Rudolf Schickmann designed it.

In 2007, AmerikaHaus NRW e. V. was founded. Jeane Freifrau von Oppenheim, Fritz Schramma, and Matthew G. Boyse initiated it. It became the successor to Amerika Haus Cologne. This ensured a continued contact point for transatlantic dialogue in NRW. Corporate and personal partners supported the organization. They provided intellectual and financial support. AmerikaHaus NRW e. V. opened its new office in Apostelnstraße in 2008. It focuses on event planning. They host around 40 events per year. These events focus on transatlantic dialogue. They reach over 4000 guests in NRW.

Today, Amerika Haus e. V. NRW continues to promote German-American relations. It is a non-profit organization. It focuses on events in politics, culture, economy, and education. It serves as a modern network. It cooperates with transatlantic actors in NRW and beyond. It offers a platform for transatlantic dialogue. It is committed to addressing and promoting the next transatlantic generation. Since April 1, 2021, Amerikahaus NRW e.V. is a certified EducationUSA center. It offers free virtual assistance. This assists those interested in studying or doing research in the US.

So, the Amerikakreuz stands as a reminder. It symbolizes the enduring connection between Cologne and America. It represents a history of cultural exchange. It signifies political dialogue and mutual understanding. It is more than just a memorial. It is a symbol of transatlantic friendship.
