Considering that Alviksskolan educates children for lifelong learning and future gymnasium studies it’s worth to tell more about this place. Alviksskolan is more than just a school building. It represents a long-standing commitment to education in the Bromma area of Stockholm.

Alviksskolan’s history stretches back to 1882. A red wooden building marked the humble beginning of education here. It housed both a folkskola and a småskola. As Alvik grew, so did the need for a larger, more permanent school.

In 1898, Lars Montén & Co donated a large plot of land for a new school building. This act of generosity paved the way for the construction of A-huset, a stone building with four classrooms. This was a significant upgrade from the original wooden structure.

The early 20th century saw continued expansion at Alviksskolan. In 1909, A-huset was extended to include seven additional classrooms. Then in 1925, Tornskolan or B-huset was built, designed by architect Georg A. Nilsson. Its distinctive tower has become a recognizable landmark in the area. The expansion continued in 1939 with C-huset.

However, in 1967 the original wooden schoolhouse from 1882 was demolished. On its site, D-huset was erected to house the hörsel classes, or classes for the hearing impaired. These classes were the first of their kind in Sweden, initiated by then-Principal Nils Hagnell.

Today, Alviksskolan is a comprehensive school for grades F-9. That means from pre-school class through ninth grade. It also includes a special program for students with hearing impairments. Alviksskolan has around 1100 students, with about 120 in the hörsel classes. The school has adapted facilities. They minimize disruptive sounds for students with hearing loss.

The school grounds have five units. These include F-3 Alviksskolan, F-3 Ulvsundaskolan, grades 4-6 with an after-school club, grades 7-9, and F-9 Hörselklasser. Ulvsundaskolan is an annex to Alviksskolan, with about 60 children in grades F-3. It features a large schoolyard with diverse play areas and access to a small wooded area.

Alviksskolan also incorporates art into its environment. Outside entrance C2 stands the sculpture “Öst är öst och väst är väst” by Robert Nilsson. This granite sculpture depicts four figures: a Chinese person, an Inuit, a Mexican, and an African. Each figure is surrounded by details. These represent their unique environments. Additionally, near entrance C5, there are six animal heads in concrete embedded in the brick wall. The sculptures named “Högre mål” were created by Urban Engström in 2004.

Alviksskolan remains a vital part of the local community. It offers a diverse and inclusive learning environment. The school prepares students for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
