Picture the remnants of Altino a once-thriving Roman city. Here before you lie the vestiges of a remarkable past. Imagine a bustling port a vital trading center connecting the Mediterranean with northern Europe. Altino was more than just a waystation. It was a nexus of commerce and culture. Its strategic location near the Venetian Lagoon made it a key player in the Roman world.

Altino’s story stretches back far beyond the Roman era. Archaeological evidence shows human presence as early as the 10th century BCE. Hunter-gatherer groups thrived in this wetland area. By the 7th century BCE a settlement had taken shape. It grew into a significant Venetic town. It was already a major port even before the Romans arrived.

The arrival of the Romans marked a new chapter for Altino. The construction of the Via Annia and later the Via Claudia Augusta solidified its role as a crossroads. It was a bustling port. It connected the sea to the inland trade routes. Roman merchants flocked to Altino. Its importance grew exponentially. The city expanded and flourished for centuries. Altino’s wealth is reflected in the remains of its impressive public buildings. It had a theater an amphitheater and even a large baths complex. It became a municipium around 42-40 BCE. The emperor Claudius further enhanced Altino’s infrastructure. He built a branch of the Via Claudia Augusta connecting it to the Alps. He also extended navigable waterways to link Altino to Ravenna.

The peak of Altino’s prosperity was from the 1st century BCE to the 2nd century CE. Its size rivaled even Pompeii. However like many other Roman towns Altino began a slow decline. This decline is confirmed by reduced archaeological finds after the 2nd century.

Several emperors stayed in Altino. Theodosian Code records sixteen laws issued here. Lucius Verus even died here in 169 CE during the Marcomannic Wars. The city withstood Attila’s destructive raid in 452 CE. However the change in the coast line eventually doomed the city. Sea-borne sand and shifting waterways made it less habitable. The inhabitants gradually relocated to Torcello and other islands in the lagoon. This migration is credited with starting Venice.

The National Archaeological Museum of Altino stands as a testament to this fascinating city. Its artifacts tell a complex and captivating story. Altino may be mostly buried beneath the soil yet its legacy lives on. This legacy continues through the museum and the ongoing archaeological excavations. Remember Altino when you think of Venice’s roots. It is a place where ancient history and modern discovery beautifully intertwine.
