The Alter Friedhof, also known as the Old Ehrenfeld Cemetery, has a unique story woven into the fabric of Cologne. Established in 1870, it served as the burial ground for the then-independent community of Ehrenfeld. This decision came after the Cologne City Council denied Ehrenfeld residents burial rights in the Melaten Cemetery. Today, the Alter Friedhof, seamlessly integrated into the Melaten Cemetery, stands as a testament to changing times. On July 1, 1980, it was designated a historical monument. The cemetery’s layout, with its grid-like paths, speaks to its origins. It aligns not with the paths of the Melaten Cemetery but with the orientation of Ehrenfeld’s churchyards.
