“Spitalkelter der Reichstadt Esslingen” – can you even pronounce that? Well here at the Alte Kelter in Stuttgart-Vaihingen, such phrases echo through the centuries. This is no ordinary building. It is a testament to Stuttgart’s rich history.
Let’s step back in time. Imagine the year is 1516. The Alte Kelter is first documented. Back then, vast vineyards covered the Filder plains around us. Wine production was the lifeblood of this region. It was a primary source of income for the local population.
As you can see, the Alte Kelter was initially a “Spitalkelter”. It belonged to the Imperial City of Esslingen. It served as a wine press for the local hospital. The grapes would have been harvested. They would have been brought here. They would have been pressed to make wine for the patients.
Over time, winegrowing declined in importance. The Alte Kelter lost its original purpose. It was repurposed for storage. Then, in 1913, a peculiar addition occurred. A hose tower for the fire brigade was added. Imagine firefighters training here ready to spring into action.
Later in 1940, an extension was built. It initially housed the fire department. Later, it became a police station. The police moved out in 1995. Then the Bürgerverein Vaihingen-Rohr-Büsnau stepped in. They leased the extension and provided space for artists. The Alte Kelter itself fell into disrepair. It was used for minor purposes only. Its structural condition worsened.
Thankfully, in 2003, a decision was made. The Alte Kelter would be renovated and remodeled. Construction began in 2004. After 15 months, the revitalized Alte Kelter was inaugurated in July 2005.
Now, look around. The Otto-F.-Scharr-Saal stands as a testament to generosity. The Otto-F.-Scharr-Stiftung financed the renovation. This hall now hosts many events. These include club festivals, family celebrations, weddings, seminars, and lectures.
The Otto-F.-Scharr-Saal is a spacious area. It is 180 square meters in size. It boasts a beautiful parquet floor. The hall features a grand piano, a screen, and a sound system with a microphone. There is also a spacious foyer. A fully equipped kitchen is available. All rooms are accessible. Restrooms are located on the ground floor and in the basement.
