Gazing up at the Alte Kaserne, have you ever wondered about the stories held within these aged walls? The Alte Kaserne stands as a landmark in Swakopmund, a testament to a time of German colonial rule. This historic fortress, featured prominently on Swakopmund’s coat of arms, was more than just a military structure. The Alte Kaserne played a vital role in the town’s development. Constructed between 1905 and 1906, the Alte Kaserne initially housed the workers of the 2nd Imperial Railway Construction Company. These workers were instrumental in building Swakopmund’s jetty, a critical piece of infrastructure for the burgeoning port town. Later, the Alte Kaserne served as barracks for the Schutztruppe, the German colonial troops. Interestingly, the design of the Alte Kaserne shares similarities with other prominent structures from the German colonial era. The Alte Feste in Windhoek and Fort Namutoni in Etosha National Park exhibit a similar architectural style, echoing the distinct features of German military construction. The building itself is a fascinating blend of form and function. Two wings, measuring 55 and 45.5 meters respectively, extend outwards, anchored by two two-story towers at the center. Smaller towers adorn the corners, adding to the building’s imposing presence. The Alte Kaserne continued to serve the community even after Namibia’s independence. Until 1993, it functioned as a school, educating generations of Swakopmund’s youth. Today, it stands as a youth hostel, welcoming travelers from around the world and continuing its legacy of service. The Alte Kaserne’s enduring presence serves as a reminder of Swakopmund’s rich history, from its colonial origins to its vibrant present.
