Have you ever heard of the “Niehler Dömchen”? That’s the nickname locals have affectionately given to Alt St. Katharina, this charming church standing before you. Alt St. Katharina has witnessed centuries of Cologne’s history. Its story begins in the 12th century as a grand Romanesque basilica. Imagine the three aisles stretching before you, leading to a majestic West Tower. Over time, the church underwent various transformations. In the 13th century, a Gothic choir replaced the south aisle. Around 1400, the central nave received a beautiful vaulted ceiling. Centuries later, in 1894, the north aisle was rebuilt, carefully following the original foundations. As the population of Niehl grew, the need for a larger church became apparent. That’s when the architect Theodor Kremer built Neu-St. Katharina. Completed in 1894, this newer, grander church stands further south. But Alt St. Katharina, our charming “Dömchen”, retains its historical significance and serene atmosphere. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the ever-changing cityscape of Cologne.
