Is it possible for a church to be a battle horn? Actually it can. Today I will tell you the story of Alt St. Cornelius. This building is more than just stones. Alt St. Cornelius embodies faith and Rhineland history.

Alt St. Cornelius stands as a testament to Cologne’s religious heritage. It offers a glimpse into the stories of saints. It also gives us a sense of the city’s medieval past. But who was St. Cornelius?

Cornelius was Pope. He led the Church in the mid-3rd century. His papacy followed a time of Christian persecution. Emperor Decius demanded sacrifices to Roman gods. Christians faced death if they refused.

Two views arose after the persecution. Novatian said those who stopped practicing Christianity could never return. Cornelius believed the lapsed could return after penance. This led to conflict.

Cornelius convened a synod. Sixty bishops confirmed him as the rightful Pope. They excommunicated Novatian. The synod also decided that Christians could return after penance.

Later, Emperor Gallus exiled Cornelius to Centumcellae. He likely died from the hardships. Some say he was beheaded. Cornelius was buried in a catacomb. His tomb bore the inscription “Cornelius Martyr”.

During the Middle Ages, some of his relics went to Germany. Kornelimünster Abbey, near Aachen, claimed his head. In the Rhineland, he became a patron saint of lovers.

A legend tells of an artist decorating the Cornelius Chapel. A townsman’s daughter fell in love with him. Her father only agreed to the marriage if the Pope did too. Miraculously, the statue of Cornelius blessed them.

Cornelius was venerated with Quirinus of Neuss. Hubertus and Anthony the Great were venerated too. They were the Four Holy Marshals in the Rhineland.

Another legend says Cornelius turned pagan soldiers into stone at Carnac. The Catholic Church celebrates St. Cornelius on September 16. He shares this day with St. Cyprian.

His name means “battle horn”. Icons depict him with a cow’s horn or a cow. He is the patron saint against earache. He is also a saint for epileptics and fever. He is a protector of cattle and domestic animals. The town of Kornelimünster also recognizes him.

The story of Alt St. Cornelius connects to the life of Pope Cornelius. It links him to Cologne and the Rhineland. Cornelius represents resilience and faith. He offered forgiveness in troubled times. As we leave Alt St. Cornelius remember the stories. Remember the legends and the history. It is a place of faith and a symbol of Cologne.
