Frans Oskar Hagman had a vision. In the 1850s, he built Villa Alphyddan. This Swiss-style summer house marked the beginning of Alphyddan’s story.
Alphyddan is a residential area in Nacka. It lies southeast of Stockholm’s inner city. The area sits between Värmdöleden and Värmdövägen. It also borders the Svindersberg nature area.
Initially, maps called this area Sickla or Stora Sickla. Hagman, a manager at Krooks Petroleum, built his villa here. By 1872, maps referred to the area as Alphyddan. Hagman’s children and grandchildren built more villas here. These wooden houses were demolished in the 1960s. They were in poor condition. Modern buildings replaced them.
Nacka municipality planned to build housing in Alphyddan in the 1940s. However, construction was delayed. The route of Värmdöleden was undecided. A city plan was finally presented in 1959.
The city plan was created in Nacka’s city architect office. Albin Hamrin led the project. Anders Diös AB built the area between 1960 and 1965. Architects Sven Backström and Leif Reinius designed the houses and garages. The buildings feature red brick facades. They also have white balcony fronts. Bay windows add to the area’s character. In total, 700 apartments were built. These were in five high-rise buildings and eight lower lamella buildings. Alphyddan had good public transport from the start. This included both rail and bus services.
To meet parking needs, a large service station was built. Special garage facilities were also added. These had space for 500 cars. However, the number of parking spaces soon proved too small. A second garage for 120 cars was later built.
Svindersvik School was built near Alphyddan. Tore Axén was the architect. Today, it is the Music/Art School Maestro.
In 2018, 230 student apartments were completed. ETTELVA Arkitekter designed these buildings. They are in a 16-story high-rise and a lamella building.
Between the residential area and the garage is a small park. Here stands the sculpture group Two Bison. Arvid Knöppel created it. Anders Diös AB commissioned the work. The unveiling ceremony was held on April 25, 1967.
In 1984, Musikhuset Alphyddan opened. It offers rehearsal rooms and a recording studio. Studiefrämjandet runs it today.
Alphyddan Weisse, a light south German wheat beer, was launched in May 2016. Nacka brewery created it.
Today, Alphyddan stands as a testament to thoughtful urban planning. It blends residential living with accessible amenities. Its history shows a commitment to both community and progress. From Hagman’s villa to modern apartments, Alphyddan continues to evolve.
