Have you ever noticed a simple granite plaque on the wall of a building? It’s easy to miss, tucked away in the shadow of a bustling street, but there is a story behind it, a story of art and its connection to a legendary sculptor, Alois Folkman. Folkman was a famous sculptor who worked in Prague in the late 19th century. There’s a plaque here, a small monument, dedicated to his memory. This is the Alois Folkman Plaque. It’s a simple memorial, a testament to a talented artist. The inscription reads “Památce sochaře Folkmana 1851-1917”. That means “To the memory of sculptor Folkman” and it was placed here in 1934 by the Czech Society of Arts. Alois Folkman’s works can be found throughout Prague. You can even see his “Allegory of Hail” on the facade of the Prague City Insurance Company on Old Town Square.
