What if these walls could talk? All Saints Church in Cape Town has a remarkable story to tell. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith, resilience, and community.

All Saints Church stands proudly on Roodebloem Road in Woodstock. Its story began long before the current structure. The first All Saints Church was established in Durbanville in 1856. It was completed and dedicated in 1860. Anglican services were initially held in premises along the main road. This was between Church Street and Wellington Street.

Sophie Gray designed the original All Saints Church. She was the wife of Robert Gray. He was the first Bishop of Cape Town from 1847 to 1872. Sophie Gray brought architectural plans from England. These plans were adapted for churches and schools. They were for new Anglican parishes throughout South Africa.

The church initially served about 300 people. It housed the community’s school during the week. On Sundays and special occasions, it transformed into a place of worship.

By 1982, the parish had grown significantly. The building was extended and given a cruciform shape. Stained glass windows were installed. A gallery was added on the south side.

Tragedy struck on June 4, 1996. A fire destroyed the church building and its furnishings. Only the brass cross survived. It is still used in the church today. Also the brass crosses on the wardens’ wands survived.

The community rallied together. Within a year, All Saints Church was rebuilt. It was re-dedicated on October 26, 1997.

Today, All Saints is a thriving community. It has about 1800 members. Services include English, Afrikaans, and Xhosa. Three chapelries are part of its ministry. They are St Paul-in-the-Valley, St John’s Klipheuwel, and St Monica’s Fisantekraal.

All Saints seeks to address community needs. It does this through worship, evangelism, education, social responsibility, and pastoral care. The church promotes Christian unity. It strengthens Christian witness.

All Saints complex includes the original church and the old parsonage. There is also a church hall and a garden of remembrance. The complex dates from 1860. It is closely linked to Durbanville’s history. It was declared a National Monument in 1982.

The Anglican Church in this Province was established in 1870. Its first Provincial Synod was held in Cape Town. It now has 25 dioceses. These are found in Angola, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mocambique, Namibia, South Africa, and St Helena. It has 34 million members. They speak many languages. They represent many cultures and races.

Consider the journey of All Saints. From its humble beginnings to its present-day vibrancy. It stands as a beacon of hope. It reflects the enduring spirit of its community.
