Have you ever walked into a place and felt instantly connected to everyone around you? Right here, at the All Alongside of Each Other installation in Central Station, artist Rose Nolan has captured that feeling. This massive artwork, unveiled in 2023, stretches 113 by 19 meters. It’s one of the largest art pieces inside an Australian railway station. All Alongside of Each Other transforms the North-South concourse into a shared experience. The artwork is a terrazzo floor drawing. It’s designed to look like an athletics track, with parallel lines guiding commuters to their destinations. As you walk along it, you become part of a larger movement, all alongside of each other. The red color of the terrazzo connects All Alongside of Each Other to Central Station’s history. It echoes the hues of the old ticketing office and the northern concourse’s brick facades. The artwork also incorporates inlaid text phrases. These phrases encourage mindfulness and connection. “Simply breathe naturally,” one phrase suggests. “Expand the circle of compassion outwards,” another prompts. These gentle reminders invite us to be present and consider our shared humanity, even amidst the hustle of the station. As you approach from the Eddy Avenue entrance, you’re greeted by large red and stainless-steel lettering. This lettering spells out the artwork’s name, All Alongside of Each Other. It serves as a welcome and a reminder of the artwork’s core message: in this bustling urban environment, we are all connected.
