See the twin structures before you? These are the Alfords Point Bridge. This marvel spans the Georges River. It connects Alfords Point and Padstow Heights.

Alfords Point Bridge isn’t just one bridge. It is a set of twin bridges. The first bridge opened in 1973. The second was completed in 2008. Together, they efficiently manage traffic flow.

Back in the day, crossing the Georges River here was a different story. Before the Alfords Point Bridge, people relied on the Lugarno ferry. This ferry had been in service since 1843. Imagine the long waits. Think about the limited capacity. The Alfords Point Bridge brought much-needed relief.

The initial plan was always to have twin bridges. When the first Alfords Point Bridge was built in 1973, it was designed for three lanes. However, it initially operated with just one lane in each direction. In 1980, traffic management was updated. A tidal-flow system was introduced. This meant two lanes northbound in the morning and two lanes southbound in the evening.

Even before the first Alfords Point Bridge opened, planners looked to the future. They constructed a second set of piles and abutments downstream. This foresight allowed for the duplication of the bridge. The second Alfords Point Bridge opened in 2008. It handles southbound traffic. The original Alfords Point Bridge became dedicated to northbound traffic.

Alfords Point Bridge stretches 445 meters in length. It is made of concrete and steel. The bridge has a box girder design. It has ten piers. Six of these piers stand in the water. Each carriageway is 15.3 meters wide.

Alfords Point Bridge forms a vital link in Sydney’s road network. It is part of State Route A6. The bridge connects the Sutherland Shire and the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. It replaced the Lugarno punt service. The bridge is the most western bridge in the Sutherland Shire, behind the Captain Cook bridge, Tom Uglys bridge, Como bridge and Woronora bridge.

From below, the Alfords Point Bridge offers a particularly impressive view. The pillars supporting the structure are visible. At sunset, the bridge appears even more stunning. The curve of the bridge makes for interesting photographs.

Alfords Point Bridge stands as a testament to Sydney’s growth. It highlights the importance of efficient infrastructure. Next time you cross this bridge, remember its history. Think about the ferry it replaced. Appreciate the vision that created this vital link.
