Can you imagine a canal built by the unemployed? Right here before us lies the Alexandra Canal. It’s a far cry from its origins as Shea’s Creek, a humble salt marsh. The Alexandra Canal, named after Princess Alexandra, wife of Edward, Prince of Wales, stands as a testament to Sydney’s industrial ambitions. This waterway, stretching 4.5 kilometers from Alexandria to Tempe, where it meets the Cooks River, was meant to be Australia’s Birmingham. Dredging began in 1887, turning the marshy Shea’s Creek into a canal to facilitate cargo transport for the burgeoning industries. This project provided crucial employment during the 1890s depression. The Alexandra Canal was envisioned as a bustling hub, envisioned as a key part of transforming the area into a manufacturing powerhouse. Sadly, it didn’t quite work out that way. The Alexandra Canal’s shallow draught, constant silting, and the rise of road transport in the 1930s hampered its success. Originally designed with lifting bridges, these were fixed in the 1930s as canal traffic dwindled. By the 1940s, the wharves were demolished, marking the end of its navigational heyday. But the Alexandra Canal still holds fascinating stories. During its excavation in 1896, a surprising discovery was made: the butchered remains of a dugong, along with stone hatchet heads. This find offered a glimpse into the lives of Indigenous Australians before European settlement, hinting at warmer waters in Sydney’s past. The canal’s banks also hold traces of World War II history. Around 250 wool sheds were erected along its eastern side, used for temporary storage during the war. Some of these sheds remain standing today. Even the digital age has left its mark on the Alexandra Canal. In 1999, the Southern Cross Cable, a vital artery for Australia’s internet traffic, was laid beneath its waters, connecting the continent to North America. Though industrial dreams faded, the Alexandra Canal remains a unique blend of history, industry, and nature. It is a fascinating waterway that almost was.
