Centuries of stories reside within these timeworn walls. Right here we have the Aldinger Mühle. It stands as a testament to time’s relentless march.
The Aldinger Mühle’s tale begins long before its current form. A mill was first documented in Aldingen in 1431. This original mill was located further up the Neckar River from where we stand. The lords of Kaltental declared it the Bannmühle in 1578. This meant local farmers were required to have their grains milled here. In 1693, during the War of the Palatine Succession, Mélas’s troops destroyed the old mill. For about 170 years, Aldingen was without a mill.
However, in 1867, miller Gottlob Lauer constructed the Aldinger Mühle that you see today. It boasted four grinding gears and one hulling gear for spelt. In 1919, miller Eugen Greb significantly renovated and modernized the mill. Tragedy struck in 1933 when a fire broke out.
A major change occurred in 1936. The Neckar River was expanded into a major shipping waterway. This expansion straightened the river’s course. The Aldinger Mühle was now some distance from the river. A dam and a state road separated the mill from the water. Eugen Greb switched to electric power in 1936. He then relinquished his water rights to Neckar AG. The water’s power was still harnessed via the Aldingen weir’s hydroelectric plant. The Aldinger Mühle ceased operations in 1990.
The municipality of Remseck later used the building for storage. In 2006, the building underwent renovation. A restaurant and commercial spaces were established within its walls. A nearby Stuttgart Stadtbahn station is named after the Aldinger Mühle.
