Established in 1983 the Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium stands proudly in Stuttgart-Sommerrain. It’s a state-recognized Catholic free school. The school occupies a building with an interesting past. It was once home to the Collegium Ambrosianum a late-vocational seminary. The seminary was restructured and moved to Ehingen. The Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium inherited its kitchen and dining hall. This provided a convenient daily program including lunch homework help and recreation.

The school’s foundation dates back even further to 1957. A group of devout citizens formed the St Albertus Magnus Stuttgart association. Their goal was to establish a Catholic boys’ gymnasium in Stuttgart. The Franciscan Sisters of Siesen initially took on the school’s sponsorship. They already ran St Agnes girls’ gymnasium in Stuttgart. In 1991/92 the first co-educational year began due to high parental demand.

A significant pedagogical step was the introduction of the Marchtaler Plan in 1994/95. This reform pedagogical concept is based on a Christian worldview. It’s now considered groundbreaking. In 1991 the Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium’s sponsorship transferred to the Catholic Free School Foundation of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart. Since 2006 the Albertus-Magnus-School Foundation Stuttgart has been the sponsor. This local foundation is part of the SKFS.

The Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium offers a comprehensive education. Students can choose between French or Latin in the sixth grade. This allows for the acquisition of the Latinum. They choose their second foreign language before enrollment. In the seventh grade they choose between language and science profiles. Italian is offered as an additional foreign language. The school also has a special program for secondary school graduates. It allows talented students to complete their Abitur in three years.

The school boasts a strong international focus. It maintains school partnerships in Italy France and the Czech Republic. These partnerships provide exchange opportunities for students. Approximately 700 students are taught by around 60 teachers. The current headmaster Georg Braun succeeded Gabriela Künne in 2021. Heinrich Hoffmann served as the founding headmaster until 2002. Notable alumni include jurist and politician Matthias Pröfrock and footballer Leonie Maier. The Albertus-Magnus-Gymnasium a true gem of Stuttgart’s educational landscape continues to thrive. It blends tradition innovation and a strong sense of community.
