Have you ever heard of the first gymnasium in Germany with a bilingual Spanish/German branch? This is the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium in Hürth, a town near Cologne. This school was built to accommodate the growing number of students in the area and opened its doors in 1974. You can probably see the Gymnasium’s original building, a modest structure, right behind me, but that’s not the whole story. The school quickly expanded. It has since grown to become a modern educational institution with a lot to offer to its students. The school is a landmark for the town of Hürth. In 1988, the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium became a pioneer in bilingual education. Their Romanist Engelbert Wefers led the initiative to introduce the bilingual branch, which has grown to include 300 students who learn geography, history, and politics in Spanish. The school’s commitment to international understanding is evident in its partnerships with schools in San Sebastian, Belgium, and Great Britain.
