The name Akishima itself is quite unique. It combines parts of the names of two former municipalities. These municipalities are Shōwa and Haijima. It uses the kun’yomi reading of Shōwa and the on’yomi reading of Haijima.
Akishima’s history stretches back to ancient times. It was once part of Musashi Province. This area was known for sericulture. That is the production of silk. Later, it became part of Kitatama District in Kanagawa Prefecture. Eventually, it was transferred to Tokyo Metropolis in 1893.
In 1961, an incredible discovery was made here. A complete fossilized whale skeleton was unearthed in the Tama River. This event forever changed Akishima’s identity. During the 1930s, Akishima transformed into an industrial hub. This was spurred by the establishment of Tachikawa Airfield in 1922. Large-scale munitions factories sprung up. They supported aircraft manufacturing for the Imperial Japanese Army.
