Originally, Akagi Shrine was established in the 1300s. It started as a spiritual branch of Akagi Shrine on Mount Akagi in Gunma Prefecture. Over time, many such branches sprang up in the region. The deities enshrined here are Iwatsutsuo-no-mikoto and Akagihime-no-mikoto.

But time took its toll. The original structure burned down in 1842. Rebuilt, it was again destroyed during the bombings of 1945. A kindergarten rose on the site in 1951.
Fast forward to 2010. Akagi Shrine underwent a complete renewal. Renowned architect Kengo Kuma led the redesign. The kindergarten closed in 2009. Kuma was tasked with redesigning the shrine. The new design had to include apartments and a cafe gallery.
Kengo Kuma created the modern style you see today. It attracts women especially. The level of the shrine was raised drastically. Now, impressive stone stairs lead up to the shrine building. Storage areas, garages, and offices lie underneath. Even before 2010, the shrine stood atop Kagurazaka hill. Now, it stands even higher.
