“Planes, bridges, and tunnels,” a child exclaimed. The Airport Core Programme Exhibition Centre stands before us. It is more than just a building. It is a gateway to Hong Kong’s ambitious dreams.
This distinctive white structure houses stories of transformation. It showcases the Airport Core Programme. This was often called the Rose Garden Project. It shaped Hong Kong as we know it.
Originally, this building was Homi Villa. Jehangir H. Ruttonjee, a private developer, built it in the early 1930s. The Hong Kong Government later acquired it. It became staff quarters for British army officers. Sir Philip Haddon-Cave even resided here. He was the Financial Secretary between 1971 and 1982.
In 1995, the New Airport Projects Co-ordination Office transformed Homi Villa. It became the Airport Core Programme Exhibition Centre. The center opened in early 1996. During its first six months, 100,000 people visited. Weekends saw over 2,000 visitors. It was a sensation.
The Airport Core Programme Exhibition Centre has five exhibition areas. These areas display models and photos. They offer descriptions of ten airport-related projects. Visitors gain a full picture of the Hong Kong International Airport’s construction.
Even though the Airport Core Programme finished in 1998, the exhibition centre remained open until December 31, 2024.
On the rooftop, you can find permanently mounted binoculars. Through them, you can view the Tsing Ma Bridge. It connects Tsing Yi and Ma Wan. It’s part of the Lantau Link, which connects the New Territories and Chek Lap Kok.
Homi Villa showcases Neo-Classical colonial style. Notice the verandah. See the curved steps leading to the entrance. Admire the white stucco-work and classical columns. Ornamental balustrading graces the verandahs and roof parapets. In 2010, Homi Villa was rated a Grade 3 historic building.
The Airport Core Programme Exhibition Centre offered a magnificent view. The Tsing Ma Bridge was visible from the rooftop viewing platform. The garden outside also provided scenic views.
Now, Homi Villa will become “CNHE Youyou Villa”. This learning center is part of the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme. The Tsuen Wan District Office discontinued the Airport Core Programme Exhibition Centre’s operation on December 31, 2024.
The Airport Core Programme Exhibition Centre is a reminder of Hong Kong’s grand vision.
