Seven and a half acres of donated land. That’s the foundation of Airey Park. This sprawling green space in Homebush isn’t just a park. It’s a testament to generosity and community spirit. It all started in 1919. The executors of Henry Marcus Clark’s estate donated the land. He was the founder of Marcus Clark & Co Ltd a huge retail company in Sydney. Joseph Airey the company’s manager played a crucial role. He secured the donation. He was also an Alderman of Strathfield Council. His dedication earned him the honor. Airey Park was named after him in 1920.

Airey Park wasn’t always the beautiful park you see today. The land was initially unsuitable for homes. It was low-lying flood-prone and bisected by a waterway. Saleyards Creek Stormwater Canal still runs through the park. One section is an open canal concreted in the 1930s as a government work relief project. The other flows underground. The park even served as a landfill for a time. This was a common practice to level uneven parkland.

But the story doesn’t end there. In 1953 Homebush Boys High School wanted a sports oval. They offered financial contributions. The school community the Old Boys’ Union and the Parents and Citizens Association contributed significantly. Strathfield Council added funds. A loan from the Commonwealth Bank sealed the deal. The first sod was turned on May 10 1956. The Airey Park Oval was officially opened on December 7 1957. It served as a World War II memorial for former students.

The oval wasn’t the only addition. Over the years bowling greens a community centre a preschool and a children’s centre were built. Sadly the bowling clubs eventually closed. Their spaces were repurposed for children’s services. Even an oil pipeline was constructed through the park in 1978. It was carefully buried and leveled. Despite all this construction Airey Park remains a vibrant hub. It offers sporting facilities recreational spaces and community amenities.

Today Airey Park stands as a remarkable example of transformation and community collaboration. From its humble beginnings as flood-prone land to its current status as a beloved community space. Airey Park continues to enrich the lives of those who use it. It’s a place where history nature and community seamlessly blend. It’s a green space that truly embodies the spirit of its namesake Joseph Airey. A legacy of vision and dedication. A beautiful place for everyone to enjoy.
