Can you imagine agriculture flourishing in a desert? The Agricultural Research Organization, Volcani Center makes this a reality. Right here, we stand at the heart of Israeli agricultural innovation.

The Agricultural Research Organization, Volcani Center is not just a research center. It’s a testament to Israel’s ingenuity. Founded in 1921 by Yitzhak Elazari Volcani, it began as a small agricultural experiment station. Volcani’s vision was to advance farming in what was then British Mandate Palestine.

Initially located in Ben Shemen, the station moved to Rehovot in 1932. After Israel’s creation in 1948, it became the Agricultural Research Station under the Ministry of Agriculture. When Volcani died in 1951, it was renamed in his honor. The Volcani Institute relocated to its current Rishon LeZion campus in the 1950s. In 1971, it evolved into the Agricultural Research Organization.

The Volcani Center tackles agricultural challenges head-on. Israel faces limited water and varied climates. The center’s research focuses on agriculture in arid conditions. They explore irrigation with recycled water. Crop cultivation happens in protected environments. They are also minimizing produce losses through pest control. The Volcani Center even houses a seed bank.

Here’s a surprising fact. The Volcani Center has developed over 5000 crop varieties. They also hold numerous agricultural technology patents. These innovations benefit not only Israel but the entire world.

The Agricultural Research Organization is organized into six institutes. These institutes cover plant sciences and animal sciences. Further institutes are dedicated to plant protection and soil. Water and environmental sciences are also researched. Postharvest and food sciences are key. Agricultural engineering completes the array. The Israel Gene Bank for Agricultural Crops is located here.

The Volcani Center doesn’t work alone. It collaborates with government researchers. They also work with industry, educational bodies and farmers. International organizations and scientists contribute, too. Funding comes from diverse sources. The Israeli government supports them. Farmers’ organizations invest. The private sector contributes. Even the US and the European Union provide funding.

Education is central to the Volcani Center’s mission. It trains students in agricultural research. They offer opportunities for Masters and doctoral students. They also welcome post-doctoral researchers. These students collaborate with various universities.

The center extends its expertise internationally. They provide courses to scholars from developing countries. They also host courses for farmers from Gaza and the West Bank.

In 1973, a youth unit was founded. This unit engages junior and high school students in science. They participate in research projects. The Volcani Center also runs science-oriented summer camps. One unique program involves therapeutic agriculture for at-risk youth.

The Agricultural Research Organization, Volcani Center stands as a beacon of agricultural innovation. It transforms arid landscapes into fertile grounds. The Volcani Center addresses global food security challenges. Its contributions ensure a sustainable future.
