Imagine the year 1803. Charles Palmer was one of the first settlers. He received a land grant and built a slab house with three chimneys. Those chimneys still stand near Castlereagh Road and Springwood Road. The area was once called Little Richmond. Then in 1804 Andrew Thompson received a grant. He named it Agnes Bank after his mother.

Agnes Banks is more than just farmland. Natural woodlands and sandy deposits shape its landscape. The river Nepean flows nearby. Its rich alluvial soil supported farming. Peaches and oranges thrived. Dairying and market gardens flourished. Wood-carting was a major industry.

Farmers like Wellington Freeman prospered. He cultivated fruit trees and corn. He also owned an orangery a piggery and a poultry farm. James Mortimer another farmer. He lived with his wife and nine children in a simple slab cottage.

Life wasn’t always easy. The area has experienced devastating floods. The 1867 flood was enormous. William Freeman refused to evacuate his home. He was rescued from the roof.

Community spirit thrived. St Paul’s Church of England was built in 1893. It served as a social hub for many years. Later it was moved to the University of Western Sydney.

Agnes Banks has always been small. There was even a period with no hotel police station court house doctor or chemist. Yet the community was peaceful and harmonious.

This unique suburb blends the past and present offering a rich tapestry of history. A testament to resilience and the enduring spirit of its people.
