“Agincourt Mall: Changing with the times,” is what I overheard a local say about this place. Agincourt Mall isn’t just a shopping destination. It is a landmark. It reflects the evolution of retail and community life in Scarborough.

Agincourt Mall opened its doors on November 23, 1966. It was Scarborough’s first indoor shopping mall. Woolco served as the original anchor store. Santa Claus himself handed out candy canes at the grand opening.

For over five decades Agincourt Mall has provided retail options. First, with Woolco and later with Walmart and No Frills. Agincourt Mall became a central part of the Agincourt community. Its location near Ron Watson Park and the Tam O’Shanter Golf Club adds to its appeal.

Agincourt Mall has adapted to retail changes. Online shopping and changing demographics have reshaped retail. Many enclosed neighbourhood malls are losing appeal. Agincourt Mall is responding with plans for redevelopment. The goal is to elevate the local retail experience. It will bring it up to a new higher standard.

The proposed redevelopment includes residential retail office and community spaces. A public park is also planned. Thirteen towers are planned across seven blocks. The redesigned Agincourt Mall aims for high-quality sustainable growth.

Not all change is easy. Some area residents have concerns. They worry about traffic congestion and the impact of high-rise buildings. Despite these concerns the redevelopment moves forward. It seeks to balance progress with community needs.

Agincourt Mall has faced its share of incidents. In 2011 a fire in a hydro transformer caused an evacuation. No injuries were reported. In 2018 a man was stabbed in front of the LCBO store. Such events remind us of the unexpected challenges in public spaces.

Agincourt Mall is located at the northwest corner of Kennedy Road and Sheppard Avenue East. Its main tenants are Walmart and No Frills. The mall features an east-west walkway. It connects these anchor stores. North and south parking lots surround the mall.

Agincourt Mall has a story. It has evolved from a village shopping center to a modern retail space. Its history began long before the mall. The area was named after a French battlefield.

Agincourt Mall is more than bricks and mortar. It is a reflection of community. It is a place where memories are made. It is a place where the community comes together. It’s a place where the past meets the future.
