“What began as a small Bible study in 1998 has blossomed into the Agape 1 Church of Christ.” The story of this church is one of faith, growth and community. Let’s explore its journey.

In April 1998 a Bible study formed at the home of Minister Howwin and Missionary Yvonne Carter. Bishop Alphonzo D. Brooks gave his blessing. The study attracted people seeking biblical truth. Many were spiritually displaced or unchurched. The Carter’s hearts grew. They considered ministry beyond Bible study.

God led them to pastor the people holistically. They secured a place for study and worship. This ensured consistent teaching and learning of God’s word. Agape 1 Church of Christ Incorporated was established in August 1999.

The Carters sought a location. God led Pastor Carter to Southeast Washington D.C. He met Reverend Willie F. Wilson in historic Anacostia. Reverend Wilson leased them the historic Union Temple Baptist Church building. Bishop A.D. Brooks installed Elder Carter as Pastor there.

After six years God prompted Pastor Wilson to sell the building to Agape 1 Church. Now Agape 1 Church of Christ has a permanent home. It is located at 2000/2002 Fourteenth Street, Southeast Washington D.C. The Ministries address biblical truths. They also address the needs of people. They reach out to surrounding communities. Their hope is bringing restoration to lost souls.

On August 7, 2015 Agape 1 Church of Christ became the first church inducted. This was under the leadership of Bishop A.D. Brooks. He was installed as Presiding Bishop of The Way of the Cross Church of Christ, Int’l.

After 15 years as an independent ministry the Carters felt led to return to their roots. The Agape 1 Church family always felt part of the Way of the Cross. This was because of the love Bishop Brooks and the church family showed.

Agape 1 looks forward to what God has in store. It is now the Agape 1 Way of the Cross Church of Christ, Int’l. Its Pastors are Elder Howwin and Lady Yvonne Carter. They are grateful for Bishop Alphonzo D. Brooks. He poured himself into their Pastor as a spiritual father.

Elder Howwin Carter Jr. was born in Washington D.C. on May 9, 1959. He acknowledged his calling in 1991. He delivered his first message entitled “Faith, Either You Have it or You Don’t!” Hebrew 11:1. On July 29, 2019 Elder Carter was elevated to the office of District Elder.

Evangelist Yvonne Carter is a native of Washington, D.C. She was anointed to preach at the age of twenty-two. In August 1999 God instructed Elder Howwin Carter Jr. to start the Agape 1 Church of Christ. She was ordained as an Evangelist. She has worked faithfully by his side.

Agape 1 Church of Christ stands as a testament to faith-based beginnings. It is a beacon of hope in its community. Its journey reflects dedication and a strong pastoral team. It embodies the spirit of growth and restoration.
