“This building. What secrets does it hold?” Agaf LeShipur Pnei HaIr stands before us. A testament to Tel Aviv’s rich past. It’s more than just a building. It’s a living archive. It once served as Tel Aviv’s City Hall. This was the heart of the city’s administration for forty years.

Imagine bustling activity in the 1920s. The Agaf LeShipur Pnei HaIr wasn’t always the museum we see today. It began as a hotel. Abraham Sakura an Englishman owned the Hotel Sakura. The city needed a larger building. The hotel quickly transformed into City Hall. Initially meant as a temporary solution it became a permanent fixture. Celebrations took place at its entrance. Speeches echoed from its curved balcony.

For decades the Agaf LeShipur Pnei HaIr witnessed history unfold. Mayor Dizengoff’s office was within its walls. His work shaped the relationship between the city and its people. This is reflected in the museum’s permanent exhibit dedicated to him. The museum itself is a symbol of Tel Aviv’s evolution. It initially functioned only as a museum for twenty years. Then it was mainly the Tel Aviv Archive.

In 2009 on the eve of Tel Aviv’s centennial a major renovation occurred. Mayor Dizengoff’s chamber was meticulously reconstructed. A new wing was added. This houses the “The Visible City” exhibit. This features photos and stories of Tel Aviv’s life. It shows its events its sites and the experiences of its inhabitants over a century.

In the main gallery space you find a virtual exhibit. This provides a virtual tour of Tel Aviv’s “life line”. It’s a chronological timeline. Hundreds of documentaries thousands of photos and documents are there. They show landmark events in Tel Aviv’s early years. A documentary by Anat Zeltser and Modi Bar-On showcases these landmark events. The Agaf LeShipur Pnei HaIr is more than a museum. It is a journey through time. A window into Tel Aviv’s captivating past. It’s a story waiting to be explored.
