Here stands Afflecks a Manchester icon. It’s not just a market. It’s a vibrant hub in the Northern Quarter. Once known as Affleck’s Palace, it has a rich history.

Afflecks began as Affleck & Brown. This drapery business started in the 1860s. It grew into a full-fledged department store. Locals knew it for its fabrics and furs.

Shopping habits changed after World War II. Debenhams bought Affleck & Brown in the 1950s. Sadly the store closed in 1973. The area’s economic conditions made it difficult to continue.

But Afflecks rose again. In 1982 James and Elaine Walsh reopened it. They wanted to provide affordable spaces for Manchester’s creatives. They offered short-term leases. This attracted many independent businesses.

Afflecks became a haven for alternative culture. Its maze-like layout was colorful and unique. It even survived two building fires. It overcame many obstacles.

The 1990s were a boom time. During the “Madchester Summer of Love,” Afflecks thrived. Bands like the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays were popular. People flocked to Afflecks for oversized flared jeans and tie-dyed T-shirts. Eastern Bloc a record shop sold underground dance tunes.

Afflecks faced another challenge in 2008. It temporarily ceased trading. But it reopened as Afflecks under new management. Bruntwood a property developer took over. They recognized Afflecks’ importance to Manchester.

Today Afflecks houses over 70 businesses. You can find alternative clothing record shops and retro game shops. There are also cafes tattoo parlors and more. It attracts thousands of visitors every week.

Afflecks suffered fire damage in 2013. Yet it persevered. In February 2022 Afflecks celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Afflecks stands as a symbol of Manchester’s independent spirit. Its quirky atmosphere continues to draw people in. Each visit promises something new. Its collection of retailers is different from anywhere else. It leans into alternative subcultures.

So as you explore Afflecks remember its story. It’s a story of resilience creativity and community. It is a place where unique ideas flourish. It’s a must-see destination in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.
