Picture this a majestic building standing tall in Cleveland Park. This is Adas Israel Congregation a beacon of Jewish life in Washington DC.

Adas Israel Congregation wasn’t always this grand. Founded in 1869 by about thirty Jewish families it began humbly. These families left Washington Hebrew Congregation seeking a more traditional Orthodox practice. They initially met in rented spaces. They yearned for the familiar rhythms of their European services. Their desire for a more traditional worship style led them to create Adas Israel. The name itself means “community of Israel”.

For several years they worked tirelessly raising funds. Finally in 1876 they dedicated their first building. A truly momentous occasion President Ulysses S Grant attended. It was the first time a sitting US president attended a synagogue service. This original building is now the Lillian & Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum. It’s a testament to Adas Israel’s enduring legacy.

The congregation continued to grow. They outgrew their first building and then a second. By the 1940s members had moved uptown. Adas Israel moved to its current location in 1951. Architects Frank Grad and Sons designed the building. It features clean lines large scale and bright interiors. The building included a 300-seat chapel. It also had two social auditoriums 14 classrooms and a 1500-seat sanctuary. This magnificent sanctuary even has a hidden choir loft. A large engraved menorah adorns the facade. It stands as a symbol of their faith.

Adas Israel continued to evolve. It expanded and renovated in 1988 and again in 2013. The 2013 renovation was extensive. Improvements included new elevators and stairs. They also upgraded each level modernizing the building. A new facade enhances its presence in the city. The main sanctuary’s design and finishes were redone. Seating and balconies were reconfigured to accommodate 1500 people. The Beit Midrash is now the center of the building’s activity. They also phased all upgrades to minimize disruption.

Throughout its history Adas Israel has been a place of social action and change. Dr Martin Luther King Jr addressed the congregation in 1963. It was a first for a synagogue. Many other prominent figures have spoken here. They include Presidents Nixon Ford and Obama. Vice President Hubert Humphrey and Israeli Prime Ministers Golda Meir and Yitzhak Rabin also graced the pulpit. Adas Israel’s legacy extends beyond its walls. It’s a vibrant community that continues to make its mark on Washington DC. It’s a place where tradition and innovation intertwine. Adas Israel Congregation a testament to faith community and enduring strength.
